What is the average risk attitude of participants?

At BeFrank, you have your own pension pot, in which your pension contribution is deposited each month. We invest this for you. After all, investing almost always yields more in the long term than saving. However, investing also entails risk. Not everyone likes that. That is why you can choose how much risk you want to take. The final amount of your pension benefit is uncertain. This depends, among other things, on how much money you have invested and the return on your investments. That is why it is important that you invest in a way that suits you. And why we investigate every 5 years how much investment risk participants want and are able to take.

Choosing for yourself or invest according to the default

You decide for yourself how much investment risk you want to take. As long as you have not yet made a choice, you invest according to the default investment risk. This is set by your employer. This default is in line with the average risk attitude of participants at BeFrank. The risk attitude says something about how much investment risk participants want and are able to take.

Legal obligation: establishing a risk attitude

BeFrank is legally obliged to investigate at least every 5 years how much investment risk participants want and are able to take. The average risk attitude is determined partly by the outcome of this research. This means that we assess which way of investing best suits our participants. This research helps us tailor our services even better to participants who do not choose their investment risk.

What does this research mean for you?

This most recent research, carried out in 2025, has shown that the following way of investing most closely matches the average risk attitude of our participants:

  • Neutral investment risk
  • Reduction to a variable pension benefit with 30% continued investment

If you do not make a choice regarding your investment risk, this is the default way of investing. Your employer can also opt to reduce the risk to a fixed benefit instead.

How was the research carried out?

We carried out this research in cooperation with a renowned consultancy among participants at BeFrank. We used various research methods, based on scientific insights. This has given us a good idea of the risk that participants want and are able to take, both during the pension accrual and the risk reduction phase. BeFrank reviews its investment policy every year. The risk attitude helps to align this policy as closely as possible with what the participants want.
