Stop worrying!

Worrying about your weight? Concerned about your children? Fretting about your friends? We all worry a lot. About our health, our job, our finances. Buy why? And how do we stop worrying? We’ve got everything we need, but it still isn’t enough. Buying a shiny BMW, getting that long-overdue promotion at work, finishing the marathon in New York. Everyone has their own ambitions. It’s only human. But in our materialistic society, we sometimes go too far. We have everything we need, but it still isn’t good enough. We are never truly at peace with ourselves. We doubt, worry and fret about everything, from the big issues to the smaller stuff. And stress does little to help your mental and physical health.

Less is more

Breaking the routine can be difficult, because many people are stuck on autopilot: constantly working as much as they can to achieve their goals and keep everything under control, forgetting to pay attention to everything in between.

Step one: stop racing and running around. Don’t schedule four appointments in one afternoon or evening, but choose one thing to focus on. Step two: forget the future and the past, and live in the here and now. What do you see? What do you feel? Your thoughts will become much clearer.

Take control of your thoughts

What can also help enormously for notorious worriers is to write things down. In a diary, a notebook or even on Post-Its. By writing down what is bothering you, you are helping to clear your mind. You stop worrying and can focus on the things that really matter. Still worrying afterwards? If there is one thing playing on your mind more than anything else, try to focus your attention consciously on something else: that holiday you’re going on, the last nice dinner you had, that joke your daughter made. This way, you nip it in the bud, so you aren’t giving your brain the chance to worry about something.

Three golden tips to stop worrying

1. Write down three things that you are grateful for, each night before you go to sleep.

2. Exercise! Go running, get to the gym, start cycling. Keeping fit clears your mind and boosts your mood.

3. Count backwards from 100 to 0. Sounds crazy, but it takes your mind off anything that is troubling you.
