Employees from family business Faber Halbertsma Group are set to neutralise the CO2-footprint of their invested pension capital by having trees planted by Land Life Company. This will take place through BeFrank, the first pension administrator in the Netherlands to offer this facility.

Climate is high on the agenda in politics, in the world of business and among consumers. People are becoming increasingly environmentally-aware and many businesses work hard on sustainability. There is also a demand for sustainable schemes in the pension sector.

Sustainable future for coming generations
Faber Halbertsma Group, a leading supplier of sustainable, circular pooling services, is opting for a CO2-neutral pension scheme with BeFrank for its employees in the Netherlands. “Social responsibility is in our family’s DNA. We support and motivate our people to support a better, safer and healthier planet. We aim to create a sustainable future for coming generations. Every day, we try to find smart methods for transporting cargoes and supplying reusable and sustainable transport packaging for a cleaner world. A CO2-neutral pension scheme fits perfectly into our sustainability policy”, according to Ingrid Faber, CEO of Faber Halbertsma Group.

“We recognise that sustainability is becoming increasingly important both for businesses and employees. A huge amount of money is tied up in pensions so you can have a significant impact in this way”, explains BeFrank director Jan Hein Rhebergen. Research for BeFrank showed that no fewer than 76% of millennials consider how an employer treats people and the environment when looking for a new job. Almost two-thirds of this group would not work for a company that completely ignored the topic of social responsibility. Rhebergen: “The fact that Faber Halberstma Group is leading the way in sustainability is beneficial for the company as well as the employees.”

The method
BeFrank invests pension capital in investment funds with relatively low CO2-emissions. The emissions that remain are then offset. BeFrank calculates this CO2-footprint on the basis of data from the investment funds. Land Life Company applies a model to determine how many trees need to be planted to offset the CO2. The trees are then planted on wasteland with the local population. The customer is offered structural and detailed insights into the results of the planting.
